We Americans love our lattes almost as much as we love the convenience of to-go beverages in the mornings. But pretty soon, those routine Starbucks runs will be a little greener, as the Seattle-based coffee company announced Monday it would be phasing out the use of plastic straws by the year 2020. This comes as the European Union has made moves to ban the use of single-use plastic, which is heroic yet laughable when you consider how much plastic we use on a daily basis, and sadly, how much of it ends up in our oceans and rivers. Recycling is great, but only a fraction of the plastic we use actually ends up being reused. So since we can’t be trusted to take care of our own planet, our favorite coffee joint is forcing us to be responsible. We may only start drinking from the sides of our cup kicking and screaming, but sea turtles around the world will thank you for it, Starbucks.
