The opioid crisis in our country is so bad that last Fall, president Donald Trump declared the epidemic a national public health emergency. UNC scientists, though, may be swooping in to save the day. Researchers believe they’ve found a new drug-like compound that targets a specific receptor in the brain, alleviating pain without causing addiction. The discovery still appears to still be in the early stages, and it will get tested in animal models before anything else. But the advancement certainly is promising for a country that has had its fair share of struggles with substances a of late. First stop, pain meds, second stop, a cure for cancer! We believe in you, Tar Heel scientists! Keep making us proud.
